How did you become interested in Personality Assessment?

In college I took a class in Assessment at the University of Bucharest, Romania, that I enjoyed very much. I was then introduced to the main personality questionnaires and to projective techniques and I was fascinated with the Rorschach, TAT, and Jung's verbal association technique.

Tell us about your current job. We are interested in hearing about the different things that people do who work in the area of personality assessment.

I currently conduct cognitive and personality evaluations in an outpatient clinic in Boston with adults referred for various emotional, interpersonal, and/or academic difficulties.

What are the most interesting and/or meaningful aspects of your job?

I find very interesting integrating various sources of information about the clients (history, cognitive test results, self-reports, informant-reports, and implicit assessment data). It is so meaningful for me to see how various pieces of the puzzle can be assembled in a coherent psychological picture and how often this picture is very useful in understanding the person and in assisting with diagnosis and treatment!

Tell us how you initially learned about and joined SPA.

I learned about SPA as a first-year graduate student and member of the Psychological Assessment Lab conducted by my mentors Drs. Mihura and Meyer at the University of Toledo. I have been involved in research projects with them on the Rorschach since my first semester in graduate school and I presented at several SPA annual meetings. It's been always a rewarding experience for me to participate to these meetings and to see so many people, both students and professionals, who are passionate about personality assessment.

How has SPA impacted or benefited you or your career?

The SPA meeting have been an opportunity not only to learn more about research in personality assessment, but also to establish valuable contacts with people and exchange research ideas. Also, the mere fact of being surrounded by many personalities in the field whoe were role-models for me was a reinforcer in itself to pursue a career in personality assessment.

As we look forward to SPA's 100th anniversary in 2038, what do you think is important in order for the field of personality assessment to thrive and to benefit others?

I believe that personality assessment could benefit more from research in the area of implicit or performance-based measures, such as Rorschach and TAT. I believe that input from modern research paradigms from social and cognitive psychology can inform good validity studies for these measures. Also, I think that personality assessment can benefit from considering more the cultural variables that can impact test results, including but not limited to language, ethnic background, nationality, or socio-economic status.
