How did you become interested in Personality Assessment?

During university training, I learned a lot about projective methods for children. After university, I took a 3-semester part-time training in psychodiagnostics for children. After that, the next logical step was the Rorschach. Doing the Rorschach training was a great experience and a way to re-connect to the enthusiasm I had when I started out as a psychologist.

Tell us about your current job. We are interested in hearing about the different things that people do who work in the area of personality assessment.

Currently, I mainly work as a private consultant within psychiatric out-patient clinics, doing neuropsychological assessments. Within that framework, I get to do a good deal of personality assessments as well. I do some assessments on parents, whose parental rights might be revoked. In some cases, I do assessments with prospective adoptive parents, since some countries demand psychological evaluations. I do some work with school children, where there are questions about learning disabilities and school placements.

What are the most interesting and/or meaningful aspects of your job?

Connecting to and helping people understand themselves, through the process of an assessment.

Tell us how you initially learned about and joined SPA.

I think it must have been through the Journal of Personality Assessment. I have read it for a couple of years, but I joined SPA only last year.

How has SPA impacted or benefited you or your career?

For the past two years, I have attended quite a few events in the US and elsewhere. I have met very knowledgeable and generous colleagues there, and they have all been members of SPA. This has expanded my professional network and given me access to a wealth of knowledge and experience.

As we look forward to SPA's 100th anniversary in 2038, what do you think is important in order for the field of personality assessment to thrive and to benefit others?

Proving and communicating the potentially transforming and therapeutic value, of sensibly performed assessments.
