Professional Bio

Sam is a postdoctoral researcher in the Institute of Psychology at the University of Tartu, Estonia. He recently completed a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, working with Prof René Mõttus.

Much of his past research has focused on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of personality assessment, with an aim to comprehensively measure narrow personality traits and understand how to leverage the unique incremental information they provide over broader domains and facets. He has recently entered the field of mental health and is interested in understanding whether and how lessons from personality assessment can inform our understanding of psychopathology structure, trajectories, and etiology.

Sam is currently working with several large cohort studies to map phenotypic data onto the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) to expand the evidence base for the generalizability of dimensional models of mental health.
