This advanced, 90 minute webinar will provide an overview of the role of psychologists in primary care with an emphasis on the role of psychodynamic assessment.
Goals
After attending this webinar attendees will be able to:
1) describe the influence of that psychoanalysis had on the development of primary care specialties
2) describe how a psychoanalytic framework can help to assess physicians’ negative emotional reactions toward difficult patients
3) list two types of psychological assessment that takes place in primary care and how a psychodynamic approach can aid in understanding patients’ subjective experiences of there medical and psychosocial problems

Speaker
John Porcerelli, PhD, ABPP is a Professor and Psychology Clinic Director at the U. of Detroit Mercy Doctoral PhD in Clinical Psychology. From 1996 to 2016, Dr. Porcerelli served as Professor and Director of Behavioral Medicine, Department of Family Medicine & Public Health Sciences, Wayne State U. School of Medicine. He is board certified in Clinical Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology, and Psychoanalysis, and is a graduate of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. He’s a fellow of the APA, SPA, and the Michigan Psychological Association. His research interests have spanned both psychodynamics and health psychology. He has conducted studies of object relations and defense mechanisms development, changes in these constructs in response to treatments, and outcome of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. As a health psychologist, he has conducted studies of collaborative care (i.e., physicians working side-by-side psychologists in medical settings), predictors of difficult physician-patient relationships, and has developed curricula for collaborative care for residency programs. He is the recipient of the American Psychoanalytic Association Research Award in 2016, the International Psychoanalytical Association Research Excellence Award in 2019, and the APA Division of Psychoanalysis & Psychoanalytic Psychology Annual Research Award in 2022. He is a consulting editor for JPA and Psychoanalytic Psychology. Dr. Porcerelli. maintains a private practice in Birmingham, Michigan.
