Psychological Assessment of Emotional Dysregulation in Children and Adolescents: An Overview of Essential Considerations
Referrals for psychological assessment of complex children and adolescents frequently involve questions about emotional regulation in general and the possibility of bipolar spectrum conditions in particular. Understanding the nature and severity of such challenges is crucial if evaluators are to make accurate formulations and develop meaningful treatment implications. In this presentation, I offer a broad overview of the process by which an assessment psychologist evaluates and reports the nature of emotional dysregulation. Specifically, I will: (1) describe an evidence-based approach to multimethod assessment that is diversity-sensitive and considers dimensional, narrative, and taxonomic perspectives, (2) address the role of collateral-report, self-report, and performance-based measures, (3) outline differential diagnosis related to the bipolar spectrum, and (4) emphasize the importance of treatment implications.
